  • What’s That Chair?

The chair, pictured on our homepage is a Savonarola Chair.

The name “Savonarola” derives from a chair found in the convent of San Marco in Florence which was used by the 15th century Italian Dominican priest, Blessed Girolamo Savonarola for whom our Seminary is named.

Beyond that fact, the chair has a twofold meaning.

In academics the chair is a symbol of position, i.e., the Chair of an Academic Department, a seat of authority. Also, more importantly, the chair represents a place for gathering, and purposeful exchange of knowledge and experience.

The empty chair also symbolizes the fact that there is a place for those who have been called to the priesthood and diaconate.
